Michele Whetzel graduated from the University of Delaware with a BS degree in Finance and a minor in Economics.She worked as a Trust Officer at American Guarantee and Trust Company until her second child was born. For over 25 years she has been an active volunteer in the nonprofit sector, serving on the Ministry of Caring Guild Board (treasurer), the New Castle County Adopt-a-Family Board, and the Delaware Community Foundation Board. She is on the Steering Committee for Delaware ERANow and the Membership Committee of the Forum of Executive Women. In 2016 Michele was appointed by then-Governor Jack Markell to serve as a member of the State of Delaware’s Public Integrity Commission, and she just recently joined the board of Delaware Futures and the Fresh Start Scholarship Foundation, serving on the governance committees for both organizations.
Michele is the immediate past Chair of the Fund for Women Board of Trustees, serving as Board Chair of the statewide organization from 2014-2016.She has served on the Fund for Women board for ten years, also holding positions of Vice Chair, Post Grant Chair, Grants Committee Chair, and Treasurer. During her tenure on the board, Michele helped update the bylaws, develop Governing Guidelines and Communications Standards, and revise the organization’s vision and mission statements and board policies. She also headed a committee to update the organization’s logo, brochure, and other branding, and was heavily involved in enhancing the Fund for Women database.
In addition to board activities, Michele is an advisor for the New Castle County Youth Philanthropy Board through the Delaware Community Foundation; is a member of the Metro DC ARCS (Achievement Rewards for College Scientists) Foundation, an organization that gives grants to Washington, DC area graduate students studying at Johns Hopkins, The George Washington University, Georgetown University, University of Virginia, or the University of Maryland for STEM research projects; represented the Fund for Women as a member of the Delaware Grantmakers Association (now Philanthropy Delaware); and mentored at Shue-Medill Middle School for 10 years. She was on the planning committees for fundraisers for Kind to Kids; Child, Inc.; and Delaware Futures.
Michele and her husband Robert Whetzel reside in Newark and have two adult children who both live in Nashville, Tennessee.
